Started in 2001, the Dot NAME extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level names remained online.
