All generic TLD extensions and several country-code ones support a security lock option whose purpose is to hinder unauthorized transfers of active domains. Many registry operators that supervise country-code TLDs that don’t support this option are in the process of introducing it for the sake of safety and for the convenience of the domain name registrants. A domain name can be transferred only on the condition that it is unlocked and only a registrant who has access to the account with the current domain registrar can achieve that. New domain names are registered with the lock option activated deliberately, so as to impede any unapproved transfer attempts. The lock feature is among the safety measures for regulating the transfer of existing domains between registrars that have been adopted over the years.
